There’s nothing quite like a sleeping baby…

120411_blog_01

or pink ruffles and tiny toes and sweet smiles….120411_blog_03

or stretching and cooing….120411_blog_07or wide eyes exploring her surroundings…120411_blog_05

or the love of family. 120411_blog_06

When this mom of four called me to photograph her new baby, she requested we get it on the calendar as soon as possible before her baby starts to change too much. I know that feeling of wanting to capture the early days and make them stand still as newborns seem to change by the hour. :) I was so happy to make a special spot for this little baby girl and have the opportunity to photograph her. As you can see from the images above, she is such a sweet baby. It was such a joy to see each sibling hold her and interact with her in such a gentle way. This baby will have lots of love in her life for sure.

What a lovely baby! I just adore her blushing cheeks, warm smile, sparkling eyes, and sweet personality. This little babe is the fourth child in her family, and adds so much joy to everyone. I photographed her brothers and sister last year so it was super fun to return and focus just on her. I could have snapped photos of her for hours. She is just that sweet. But yes, we did also find the time to get all the kids and even mom and dad in on the fun.

I love that the family portraits we took that day are of the kids genuinely having fun. I enjoy that they are being themselves—funny, silly, happy, and sweet. I feel we documented who they are in real life and as a family. And that makes me so happy.

Since meeting and photographing this family for the first time last year, I have grown to know them better and just think the world of them. Thanks for inviting me back to photograph your sweet baby girl and everyone together. It truly is an honor. I can’t wait to add a few special canvases to your gorgeous wall gallery!

Cathy Kuester - In my dreams, I wish I had the talent to record these memories as you can. They are wonderful! Of course the subjects make it easy!!! Can you tell I'm a little bias - it truly is a beautiful work of art - both the pictures and the participants!

Joyce Boatwright - Four of the most darling pictures I've seen. So precious! I love them all.

gwen - Oh my, these are just so sweet! I absolutely love the ones of the little baby's hands. Precious!

• happy halloween •

Growing up, I have always loved Halloween. Perhaps it was that my birthday comes close after the holiday. Or maybe it’s the cool, crisp time of year that just feels so festive. And yes, it could very well be that I simply adore candy! But whatever the reason, now, as a grown-up, I still love to get into the fun. I especially had a good time this year decorating our home with little ghosts, spiders, and sweet-faced pumpkins. I thought I’d share here how I decorated the rooms for this black and orange holiday. I hope it gets you into the spirit and excitement of the day.

Lin - Your house looks wonderful. I shudder at the thought of cold days ahead, but the warmth and whimsy in your home makes me want to embrace the season. I'm sure your BOO.....tiful girls loved every touch. Can't wait to see you at Thanksgiving. Love and hugs, Lin

Whitney - Love, love, love the orange flowers. I never think of flowers for this time of year but the orange is so fun. I also love the little gourd with the heart carved out.

Jane Anthony - You are so clever---I especially love the carved pumpkins.

Melissa - So cute you are!! And hello super clean house!!!

Cindy - So fun and festive! Thank you for sharing this... I love it! Happy Halloween!!

This family holds a dear place in my heart as they were among my first clients years ago. And, they are just so much fun to be around and photograph! This time we decided to meet at a nearby park and simply play. What plan could be better? So, the kids kicked around a soccer ball, jump roped, rode bikes and scooters, climbed on play sets, and had smiles on their faces the whole time. They even brought their big, adorable dog! It truly was a fun play date. Thank you mom for inviting me back again to create special portraits for your family. I really enjoy seeing how your kids are growing into sweet, kind, and loving little people in this world.

Rachel Olsen - Love all the color and the personalities that shine through! Great work as always!!

Spending the afternoon playing with these three boys last weekend was a blast. Sure, they kept me on my toes running all over the front yard, but it was so much fun. I loved their energy, their friendship, and their playfulness. They are the sweetest, most kind boys and it was an honor to document their life right now together. During our session they played football, basketball, tumbled in the grass, explored the outdoors, and simply had fun. I love seeing kids being kids and enjoying our time with each other. I really cherished this session and love the energy captured in the images.

On a side note, has anyone noticed how many sessions I’ve had this fall season with three boys? Every time I get a phone call from a mom with three boys, I just laugh. As someone who has mostly been around girls my whole life, it’s been so cool to see how loving and kind brothers are to each other. What a special relationship they share. And, it’s really fun to see how unique each sibling is from each other—allowing individual personalities to shine within the family. Thank you to all my amazing clients with three boys who have trusted me to document this special moment in life through photography. It’s been spectacular!

Jane - Love these pictures! What a great family. Love that you are capturing all these Anderson families too!!

Rachel Olsen - What handsome boys! Look at those eyes. Love the clean, crisp captures!!

Katie - ADORABLE! And for the record, the reason we "three boys families" love you is because you always capture the precious moments among all of the noise and chaos! :)

I love this session because we just played and played outside. Swinging on the play set, creating artwork with sidewalk chalk, catching ants, blowing bubbles, playing hopscotch, hula hooping, riding scooters, climbing trees, exploring the yard, and yes, taking the most adorable photos along the way. But above all the fun, my favorite thing about this session is simply the way this family interacted with one another. The smiles, giggles, and happy looks tell the sweet story of how much this family just enjoys being together. And oh how I loved watching it all from behind the lens of my camera. These three siblings are so kind and gentle with one another. Mom and dad are so in love with each other and their children. Our time together was very organic and easy. All that mixed with the warm, glowy light of the evening makes me feel, well, oh so happy.

Wiff - Soooooo cute! I know the family must be so happy! Nice work.

Cara Breitenstein - I love these photos! What a beautiful family. And love, love, love the green button jumper.

gwen - So fun, Carolyn! I can tell you all had a great time together. What a beautiful family, and such wonderful photos of them.

piper kinney - amazing images Carolyn, your sessions always look so fun and full of laughter!

Cindy - Beautiful session Carolyn! You are so talented with capturing love and emotion in your images. I can tell how much this family loves each other!

What a joy it has been for me to see this family grow over the years through my viewfinder. This is my third session with this spectacular family and I have loved every minute of getting to know them. In fact, I knew mom and dad briefly in college, and who would have thought years later we would return together to the Miami U campus for a photo session with their three boys! How life changes so quickly — one of the many reasons why I love preserving life in the moment for families like this one. Thank you M family for entrusting me again with your special portraits. It truly is an honor to see your boys grow, change, and evolve into such special people.

To see our last session, check out this link. This family is always so easy-going and lovely with one another. I adore how casual and playful they are together. Their zest for life is simply fun and inspiring! I think that’s evident whether they are bringing home their newborn baby; or now playing with all three in a game of baseball and exploring the outdoors. I’m glad to be a part of it in some small way.

Wiff - What gorgeous eyes!!! I love them all.

Cindy - I love how casual and relaxed both mom and dad look in these photos... The boys too. Just so sweet... What a treasure these images are, Carolyn!

piper kinney - Carolyn, your light is always spot on! I just love your artistic vision, your images are beautiful, and a great looking family too! The boys are too cute!

Lauri - Beautiful photos and beautiful family!

This past weekend I had the honor of photographing a fun-loving family with three amazing boys. And yes, these three are all boy! In just our short time together they climbed a tree, rode bikes, played lacrosse, jumped in the pond, ran around like crazy, and simply had a good time. Whew! It was a super fun way to spend a Saturday evening. These boys are the sweetest brothers to one another and I love seeing their relationship in such special images. Mom had shared with me it had been awhile since they had gotten professional photos and I’m so glad they decided to document this amazing time in their life together. Thank you b family for trusting me to do just that.

gwen - Oh, Carolyn - these are just fabulous. You captured so many fantastic ones of the boys together. Love the bright colors and fun activities - looks like you all had a wonderful time. What a fun session!

Jane - These are so great! I love them. The boys are adorable and look at their gorgeous Mom. :) How are they ever going to decide which ones to pick?!?

• canvas for baby nursery •

071111_blog_01_layersToday I thought I’d share how custom photography can become artwork for your home. I love how this simple, yet oh so sweet canvas, creates a warm, special environment for a baby nursery. Placed just high enough above the yellow crib where tiny hands cannot reach, it becomes a stunning focal point for mommy, daddy, and even baby to enjoy. Yes, this baby has been known to simply giggle and giggle when looking at the portrait. So fun! This particular canvas is a 20 x 30 and is just the right size for this tiny room.

gwen - Oh, this is so fantastic! Love this image - it's absolutely perfect above the crib. What a fun room!

piper kinney - LOVE this image - perfect for the space. Cute baby too!

Rachel Clare - LOVE! What a perfect image to have above the crib.

This fresh baby was so sweet to spend the afternoon photographing. It was one of the first warm days of spring, or should I say summer, as it was nearly 80 degrees outside. It’s a photographer’s dream to be able to take newborn babies outside for that gorgeous light and fresh air. I love that the feeling of the day seems to be infused into the photographs. So breathtakingly beautiful is this baby boy. Momma did an incredible job keeping things simple with a white onesie and charming little blankets as backdrops. It definitely makes baby j the star of the show. And speaking of blankets, check out the hand knit yellow one made by grandma. (If you click the link below, you can see the ABC blanket this same grandma quilted for the big sister when she was a baby). I love that we got the big sister to jump in on the fun with some photos too. Her smile is contagious and her spirit is so bright and cheery. She’s already an amazing big sister and it was so wonderful to have her and the whole family in portraits together.

In fact, I photographed the big sister when she was just 8 days old. If you’d like to see how she’s grown in just a few short years, check it out here: big sister m’s baby photos. It’s an honor to have been the one to document these first few days in both babies’ lives for this special family.

piper kinney - absolutely beautiful! I always enjoy your work Carolyn.

Cindy - What a beautiful session Carolyn! Sweet little babe, adorable big sister and I just love the colors!

robyn - love the photos of baby j and of course big sis m too!

cara - Incredible work once again! You have such a talent. Simply amazing. Can't wait for the rest!

Melissa Surprise - Great job as always Carolyn. So bright and vibrant!
